What Is The Name Of The First Movie In India?

                A new movie from Bollywood, India’s film industry, just hit theaters and it’s really good! What’s more, it’s the first movie to come out in 2018, which makes it an exciting contender for the highest grossing film of the year. Since it’s such an important movie, let’s take a look at what the name of the first movie in India is!

Before Independence

                 The first film in the country was called Raja Harishchandra and was released in 1913. It is based on a play written by Madan Mohan Malviya, who later became the first president of the Indian National Congress. Raja Harishchandra tells the story of King Harishchandra, who sells his kingdom to ransom his son's life from a demon king. He then spends his days in exile with only one real possession: his wife Queen Taramati. The film is about 12 minutes long and features a female actor as Queen Taramati; it also has male actors playing all other parts in the film.

                The first film in India, Raja Harishchandra was released on 3 August 1913 at the Coronation Cinematograph, Bombay. It was directed by Dadasaheb Phalke, and produced by Dadasaheb Torne. A print of this film still exists. 

The story of Raja Harishchandra revolves around the king who is asked by his guru to go on a sacrifice or else he will be wiped off from the earth. The king refuses to let himself kill a cow, and so he goes on a mission to raise money for the guru instead - which he does successfully! Unfortunately for him, he gets caught in a storm and shipwrecks off the coast of Sri Lanka.

                India's first film, the Raja Harishchandra, came out in 1913 and was produced by Dadasaheb Phalke, who is also known as the father of Indian cinema.

This movie portrayed the story of Raja Harishchandra, the Indian king who sacrificed his life to save his country and people from a famine.

So it took three years for Phalke to make this epic movie which included about 10,000 people in its cast and crew, and not just anyone could be a part of this project. Participants only had to be knowledgeable in ancient scriptures.
